According to her, creating innovation is not a bed of roses when accompanied with so many challenges. She had to pause bringing her newly found idea to life until she had enough funds.
She narrated how she scaled through these challenges and how she has succeeded in working SCARFrik to the limelight.
Who is Mariam Bint Harun?
I am a digital marketer, blogger and a content creator; I also design and sell scarfs. My brand name is SCARFrik. I studied Sociology and Anthropology at Obafemi Awolowo University.
Briefly tell us about your company and the services/products you offer?
My brand is SCARFrik. We specialise in making head covers, veils and turbans from African fabrics. They are made in different forms: beaded, studded and fringed.
What is the Unique Selling Point (USP) of your business and who is your target audience?
The fabrics used in making our veils are hardly found anywhere else. They are different and comfortable for users and pronounce our identity. My target audience is all females.
What is the company’s online presence?
The company is presently on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook with hundreds of followers.
As a company, what are your achievements to date?
The major achievement is the acceptance I got from people. I was scared of the kind of reaction I was going to get from starting something new, but it has been encouraging thus far – thanks to God. My reach is expanding, although I plan on doing more very soon.
What challenges have you gone through since starting up and how do you get funds to start the business?
My major challenge was funding the business. The idea came up last year, but I could not start until this year due to funds. I saved up and kick-started the business with my money.
How is the competition in your industry and niche?
Selling of veils or turbans is very popular these days, so the competition is practically in my face. But it challenges me to be more creative and hardworking.
What are your plans for the company?
I plan to expand across the country; it has not reached the extent I want. I will love it to be seen by more and used by every female.
Any news, offers, deals or message to your audience?
We will be launching a new collection very soon; it promises to be amazing and irresistible. The pictures will be made available on our social media pages once it’s ready.
What is your advice for other start-ups and aspiring entrepreneurs?
No idea is irrelevant, and you are never too young or small to start something. Believe in yourself first before selling out your idea, that way it will affect your presentation and productivity positively. Go for what you want; there’s no limit to what you can achieve.
